Fuck

I just realized that WoTC did this right before releasing a D&D movie

Idiots
It's a truly clownshoes move.

D&D streams this year:
Brands have been omitted to protect a company from profits

The most annoying thing about the current "wizards of the coast is evil" debacle is that this like.... like... uh... our third rodeo? This century? Just from Dungeons and Dragons?
Sorry, I'm trying to make the larger point.
There's a company called USAopoly that just... makes knockoff Monopoly, because Parker Brothers owns the pictures of a train and the free parking picture, not the rules of Monopoly.

The main thrust of this is basically, "Wizards barely owns shit, and they're throwing a fuck of a fit over how they wanna get paid more"

I think we're saying the same thing but not quite getting it, I dunno. It's when you say "Public Domain" which this isn't even, this is freer than that.
OK - sure - yes - everyone should be not playing D&D - that has been the case since TSR.

Remembering that time my friend made a meme for me based on my personality and I feel called out

An adorable cat with the words "You think I'm cute" at the top and "I'm sorry" at the bottom

Also, did alt text work? Can anyone let me know?

I wish modern RPG books came bundled with a Quick start PDF if one was already made, just to be able to be like "here, make a character"
I also bought a half dozen copies of Fate Accelerated when it came out - something to give everyone - but Fate also has a *wonderful* character creation engine for letting people do the work quickly.

Also - Fate is also definitely a gold standard for that.

Unrelatedly: I think that SRDs are layed out for referencing a known system - I want a document for onboarding a player who is making a character after a GM has already sold them on the game.

*I'm okay*, but fighting the urge to never say another word is like a full time thing sometimes (despite everything)

Don't get your security advice from me, since I'm not an expert....

But thinking a lot about how you need to place your trust somewhere for the web to work, and what seems really important is in deciding who and where to place your trust.

For this and many others, I really need to find a way away from Facebook and Google (personally don't hate Netflix yet although willing to listen, and already migrated away from Apple and Amazon). I am determined too, just slow moving

https://www.pronavigator.ai/careers

apparently they aren't posted yet - but we're looking for a Director of Development and a Senior Developer

We do NLP and search on large piles of documents. Mostly trying to make the gross badly organized SharePoint everyone be accessible and usable to a person on a phone trying to answer an annoyed person's questions

Our tuesday night ttrpg online is slowly losing players but now it's down to 3 of us, and all people that my character doesn't have conflict with so last night felt incredibly seamless and that was really nice 😊
To be clear, my character is a pacifist.... in a ttrpg...

Trying to replace work slack with DeltaChat to piss everyone off

Can someone make an instance for all the Animals Daily and Hourly Animals accounts so I can fediblock it?

Making git less elegant would make git less painful to use

Ug - if anyone is looking for VP of Engineering role or a Senior Python/JS Dev role - let me know - I want to replace my manager (and a major peer) with someone I trust

reshared this

1) No idea what that unicode tombstone is
2) Don't know what to call "a person I work with a lot"
@silverwizard It's a saluting emoji: https://emojipedia.org/saluting-face/

It's a joke I learned in How I Met Your Mother, every time someone uses either "major" or "general" you salute while repeating the hypothetical officer name.
Ah, of course, that makes sense
@Liwott Are you supposed to salute Privates? Or more like a general "Thank you for your service, Private Property".
@Hypolite Petovan In HIMYM they do at least one with "private" (private joke, I think), and now that you mention it maybe someone replies that one does not salute a private

Trying not to get obsessed with new hobbies forever is..... very challenging. I need to pace myself, but slowing down my brain is a challenge even if I have a lot of skill and practice at it

Hey all, it's winter

So this is me sending vibes of love and kindness and vitamin d your way

And reminding you that if you have vitamin d in the house you can take it during the winter and it might help. Or if you have a full spectrum light bulb that can help even more ❤️

Now that December is over, it always hits me harder too, so take care and stay safe and know I'm wishing you the best

One day we will stop positing technical workarounds to "evil administrator" attacks.

"This person has (and must have) 100% access to everything, how do we stop them from accessing it?!"

reshared this

I mean, even without the fact that I know my administrator personally and know I can trust them.... I trust fediverse admins more than twitter and facebook and google admins who also have all that access because they're not working for a company that only cares about it's continued existence and profit
Yeah - that's definitely a thing I feel

You: Your husband can read your DMs
Twitter: Bari Weiss can read your DMs
Yes, definitely, but I think it would be reasonably true for anyone. Like I understand the anxiety, but what was that article in computer security? The one that essentially says, you need to find trust somewhere for the web to work... like understanding that it's essentially paranoia
Feudal Security - the Bruce Schneier idea - yeah
@silverwizard @Becky That was such a power move by Musk to weaken the “Your Mastodon admin can read your DM” position.
I think there's definitely something to be said for the fact that you can't selfhost everything

Though I definitely am wondering if I can get a block of IPv6 and just host my own damn BGP because my ISP isn't doing it

I found this out recently and it completely blows my mind that it is not common everywhere and it most places (perhaps even all? Idk...) that aren't Canada you can't just email other people you personally know money. How does that work? Do you just have to carry cash? 😭 I would be constantly anxious any time I had a lot on me for whatever person I got it from or needed to get it to
It's a private service provided by the banks, but Canada only has a few banks and they all do it
Yeah, my friend told me about it after I posted this just this morning... I'm glad, that makes me happy 😊! I just uh... wasn't really online today, I get like caught up in the hubub of childcare and forget to post about stuff

Linux just .... sometimes.... forgets that computers older than a year exist doesn't it

I have a bunch of computers from 2012, completely fine computers, just don't use EFI, and devuan is freaking the fuck out and refusing to setup grub

Do you think @Becky will notice if I use FreeBSD?
I know right!

Though my ... work... tablet... (listen, it has a mechanical keyboard...) runs linux

But I am not certain about the Wacom options

Also - freebsd also failed the "boot on this thinkcentre" test
*listens for the mechanical keyboard* … oh, oh yeah… I think I hear it…

I am still upset that Discord is Slack For Gamers
I use Discord as a concession to group chats for those that refuse to use XMPP or Delta Chat

I use Slack because work and it's not really my choice
Oh, they can refuse to use DeltaChat by just... not using DeltaChat and only doing email - and me not wanting to be a jerk - since DeltaChat does a lot of things like "sending Message Read notifs" and stuff, which is real bad.

But also - my sister isn't using it so she just gets spammed by my family group chat and keeps up via email. But DeltaChat is kinda too feature creeped to be a good experience out-of-app

For the last week I have tried to read more to the kids. This was a mistake because once I tried to read for like an hour and I started to get way too sleepy that I started missing words by the end 😞.... I think I may need to go to bed earlier

My grandma made us dozens of costumes over the years, and now I have them for my kids, and I am so happy every time my child yells "I want my jaguar costume", it makes me feel part of a family

Just hanging out with the cuties #today. With my lapdesktop being figured out by my partner and sysadmin, we've talked to them a bit about some computer stuff. We also went for a walk this morning with some friends, so it's actually been quite a lovely day so far ❤️

@silverwizard woke up feeling better so now he's doing computer things and I'm learning A computer screen with words on it on a black screen or in Grub (a bootloader), if that makes sense, with a rainbow backlit keyboard in front of it and two hands typing
Putting the image description here too incase the alt text didn't work. Please tell me if it worked 😅.

@Becky The image description shows up above the image, I'm guessing you inserted it between the opening [url] tag and the opening [img] tag instead of inside the [img]. You're so close!

As an aside, this would have shown up in the preview when you were composing your post.
Thanks! I am excited to be closer... next time I post an image hopefully I'll get it right now 😄

Looking like @silverwizard is not feeling well 😔. Gonna be practicing and learning to code on my own, but more important is that he gets rest and feels better ❤️. Wish you a speedy recovery QT ❤️
Cutie... for the longest time I've called Sean "the cutie with the hair" and then done a motion to indicate long, flowy hair with my hand that people have often mistook for me fanning myself lol.... but yes,I did kinda drop the hand movement after the two lil cuties were born... but I use QT and cutie interchangeably
Turns out when the Mastondon types got up in arms about QTs they were actually talking about keeping me off the platform

Friendica upgrade is the easiest upgrade I know of, git pull and you're dun.
Wait wait wait!

git pull
cd addons
composer install --no-dev
git pull
cd ..
php bin/console.php dbstructure upgrade

Missing a step can cause *real* issues!
atm I'm using no addons, wanna debug my missing text problem before I start playing with those
Then you don't need to run the pull on addons, but definitely run composer and dbstructure upgrade
@silverwizard @Lorraine Lee You should run the composer step in Friendica's base directory, not in addons. 😉
Well, maybe, if you want things to work

I also typed that from memory
php bin/console.php dbstructure update

As a society we need to contend with the idea of exiling people into the woods
honestly, fiberglass handled axe a few files, stones, MREs. Give them a small shelter and some books.

So can I volunteer to be exiled?
If you want to go into the woods, many mountains are fairly hard to inhabit, there are places I'm Ireland you could likely hide, and The Yellowstone Zone Of Death!

Why is it tonight that my executive dysfunction has decided that any and all tasks are horrible and awful! I gotta get something done or I'll just feel worse tomorrow 😓

I want to learn programming and I'm trying to find a language to start in.

I want a language I can write a to do program in && something I can easily bounce onto other languages from

Anyone have any thoughts on this

#programmingadvice
I do want to learn both.... actually I am very much considering this if it's simple to create a to-do list, easy to learn, and will get my feet wet.... my main concern is if it's easily knowledge I can take on to learn other programming languages because really really I want to learn the skills to do any language vs one specific one
I think I'm mostly waffling on scheme, even though I think it's pretty and it would work with my brain, is because I don't know if it would make a to-do program that simple..... but it was my university days that I touched it, and early on at that... I hardly remember what I did with it, other than something with drawing shapes

I need to automate our pipeline automation - and uh - I love recursion
@silverwizard "We have to go deeper" - from a movie whose title has unfortunately nothing to do with the recursion it depicts.

It's 5 minutes to 5 pm and the sun is gone.

The 9-5 work schedule must be abolished
Well hell, I'll be happy the day daylight savings dies.
@Scifijunkie @silverwizard Still won’t give more daylight time ☹️

I think I have adhd for a number of reasons, and my psychiatrist agrees with me, especially since I respond the way I do to medication but holy cow do I feel weird that I don't do hobby hopping like other people seem to. I wonder why I seem to be the only one 🤔 😔. I tend to become really into things but then it can last forever, I'm still thinking about ideas for things I had in high school with the feeling of "damn, I wish I could make that work"
@Becky I don't have this "hobby hopping" either.. Or at least not to intensely (maybe because of my severe depression).

But you should probably be very happy that you can dive deeper into a hobby. For me, that's indeed a problem.
I have intense interest, but whether I actually engage with it is another problem. However, yeah, I do think I'm quite lucky as far as all things go.

I hope you get to do the things sometimes at least tho, because I get how depression can go sometimes ❤️

If the Security Operations Center is so good, why doesn't the company have SOC2?

I think Fediverse search would be a good thing

I think that fundamentally that argument was ended when the WebIndex was created, and living in a post-WebIndex world basically means that searchability is the way that people approach problems and questions. I like the ability to find old thoughts and I like the ability to find old things. And I think that people who dislike it should have the tools to disable it (robots.txt, nobot, and post-autodeletion). But it would be real nice to remember something from four years ago and search it out of the memory hole.

I think about this in context of like, email. If an inbox decided "I will publish every email sent to me" I think that like, that would be fine. However, if a mail relay did that I would be suspicious as hell.

But I think that most Fediverse accounts act more like inboxes than relays. Obviously, if someone were to setup that email inbox, I would definitely think harder about sending email to it than to my friends. And I think that that change is probably the core of the tension where people worry about the fediverse.

I don't understand the people who dislike a generic search tools - and their arguments have never persuaded me - I don't know what I'm missing.

Devin reshared this.

@silverwizard Oh, I just stumbled on another emergent behavior contributing to the argument against Fediverse-wide search: the need to use elaborate and varied paraphrases when talking about popular topics (like "Beetkoin" or "Elmo") to avoid being harassed by either bots or stans. These also defeat user-defined filters for the wrong reasons.

That's definitely valid

I feel like defederation is the solution to that though - unless, of course, Mastodon.social existed

Considering setup a group riff session of the vendor-provided security training so that we can all hang out and talk security, but it in a way that's more focused and gives deeper learning and a chance for questions, but without feeling formal

Successfully pulled apart an electric train for wooden toy tracks, fixed some contacts on the battery, pulled apart the gearbox, cleaned sand and hair out of the gear, added new oil, and now we have a running train again!

I made a wand! Out of a piece of driftwood I found in the summer on the beach. And just like that the snow was gone!
A picture of a hand holding a gold and black painted wand (striped handle with black length of want with gold sparkles) in front of closed glass doors behind a snowless deck (inside looking out)

Ug, 2023 feels like it'll be the year of the Linux desktop

Still stuck on Linux for good Steam and GPU support for my gaming computer, and my Surface Tablets I'm using as a portable device apparently have wifi issues on the BSDs, and my work computer needs Linux for the MDM

So I don't have a current BSD desktop! Just 10 VMs and a VM host

The cheapest package that included the prints I actually wanted also included this monstrosity, with no way to tell them to just not bother with that one.
What am I supposed to do with this?
I'm holding a giant (16"x20") print of my grad photo. It's close enough that it's hard to tell but I think it might be larger than life.
