My grandma made us dozens of costumes over the years, and now I have them for my kids, and I am so happy every time my child yells "I want my jaguar costume", it makes me feel part of a family

Been watching Forever Knight (a vampire show from the 90s about how cops are perfect, especially when they are attacking queer people, that a bunch of people have told me is really good, and I'm not feeling it, but keeping watching since possibly first season blues...)

And the beginning of every episode they're like "He wants to emerge from his World of Darkness" in the least trademark infringing way possible in 1992.

in reply to Tezrak, Impslayer of Worlds

uh... ummmm.... my Emby server.... ...

But it looks like Apple and Amazon have it streaming

in reply to Tezrak, Impslayer of Worlds

It feels like a show that's perfect for anyone who knows what "Afters" is for in a diner at 2 am without ever getting drunk. Someone who remembers looking up pricing fangs and going "nope". And anyone remembering fighting about when to Roll Frenzy.

All of which I 100% do.

in reply to silverwizard

the 90's were a great time for TV like that. Highlander, Forever Knight, Silk Stalkings ... USA Network. Heck there was even an Aaron Spelling Kindred show based on V:tM !
in reply to Tezrak, Impslayer of Worlds

I own Kindred the Embraced on DVD!

I love the Highlander Show - the basic premise of the Immortal Western with a weird strict moral core and a focus on home and family is just so tense as a theme, it really shouldn't hold together, but somehow it just does!

I don't know Silk Stalkings... But yeah - I love what I've heard call the "90s DoGooder Show". There's a mostly normal world with a single magical thing who does good.

I feel like Buffy and then Supernatural really changed that entire genre to make it not really the specific thing it is. But you can super see Arrow or The Flash in Forever Knight, and that connection is fun.

There's a Live Action Witchblade show which uh... confounds me but definitely is on my to-watch list.

Unfortunately 2 kids mean I watch shows at approximately 1 episode/week.

in reply to silverwizard

There's an episode called 1966 and the time difference is longer. Just had one of those "Oh yeah, time exists" things

One day we will stop positing technical workarounds to "evil administrator" attacks.

"This person has (and must have) 100% access to everything, how do we stop them from accessing it?!"

reshared this

in reply to silverwizard

I mean, even without the fact that I know my administrator personally and know I can trust them.... I trust fediverse admins more than twitter and facebook and google admins who also have all that access because they're not working for a company that only cares about it's continued existence and profit
in reply to Becky

Yeah - that's definitely a thing I feel

You: Your husband can read your DMs
Twitter: Bari Weiss can read your DMs

in reply to silverwizard

Yes, definitely, but I think it would be reasonably true for anyone. Like I understand the anxiety, but what was that article in computer security? The one that essentially says, you need to find trust somewhere for the web to work... like understanding that it's essentially paranoia
in reply to silverwizard

@silverwizard @Becky That was such a power move by Musk to weaken the “Your Mastodon admin can read your DM” position.

I think there's definitely something to be said for the fact that you can't selfhost everything

Though I definitely am wondering if I can get a block of IPv6 and just host my own damn BGP because my ISP isn't doing it

Just hanging out with the cuties #today. With my lapdesktop being figured out by my partner and sysadmin, we've talked to them a bit about some computer stuff. We also went for a walk this morning with some friends, so it's actually been quite a lovely day so far ❤️

@silverwizard woke up feeling better so now he's doing computer things and I'm learning A computer screen with words on it on a black screen or in Grub (a bootloader), if that makes sense, with a rainbow backlit keyboard in front of it and two hands typing
Putting the image description here too incase the alt text didn't work. Please tell me if it worked 😅.

in reply to Becky

@Becky The image description shows up above the image, I'm guessing you inserted it between the opening [url] tag and the opening [img] tag instead of inside the [img]. You're so close!

As an aside, this would have shown up in the preview when you were composing your post.

in reply to Hypolite Petovan

Thanks! I am excited to be closer... next time I post an image hopefully I'll get it right now 😄

Looking like @silverwizard is not feeling well 😔. Gonna be practicing and learning to code on my own, but more important is that he gets rest and feels better ❤️. Wish you a speedy recovery QT ❤️
in reply to Hypolite Petovan

Cutie... for the longest time I've called Sean "the cutie with the hair" and then done a motion to indicate long, flowy hair with my hand that people have often mistook for me fanning myself lol.... but yes,I did kinda drop the hand movement after the two lil cuties were born... but I use QT and cutie interchangeably
in reply to Becky

Turns out when the Mastondon types got up in arms about QTs they were actually talking about keeping me off the platform

Why is it tonight that my executive dysfunction has decided that any and all tasks are horrible and awful! I gotta get something done or I'll just feel worse tomorrow 😓

Linux just .... sometimes.... forgets that computers older than a year exist doesn't it

I have a bunch of computers from 2012, completely fine computers, just don't use EFI, and devuan is freaking the fuck out and refusing to setup grub

Do you think @Becky will notice if I use FreeBSD?

in reply to mike

I know right!

Though my ... work... tablet... (listen, it has a mechanical keyboard...) runs linux

But I am not certain about the Wacom options

Also - freebsd also failed the "boot on this thinkcentre" test

in reply to silverwizard

*listens for the mechanical keyboard* … oh, oh yeah… I think I hear it…

I need to automate our pipeline automation - and uh - I love recursion
in reply to silverwizard

@silverwizard "We have to go deeper" - from a movie whose title has unfortunately nothing to do with the recursion it depicts.

in reply to silverwizard

Friendica upgrade is the easiest upgrade I know of, git pull and you're dun.
in reply to Lorraine Lee

Wait wait wait!

git pull
cd addons
composer install --no-dev
git pull
cd ..
php bin/console.php dbstructure upgrade

Missing a step can cause *real* issues!

in reply to silverwizard

atm I'm using no addons, wanna debug my missing text problem before I start playing with those
in reply to Lorraine Lee

Then you don't need to run the pull on addons, but definitely run composer and dbstructure upgrade
in reply to silverwizard

@silverwizard @Lorraine Lee You should run the composer step in Friendica's base directory, not in addons. 😉
in reply to Rolf Wagner

Well, maybe, if you want things to work

I also typed that from memory

in reply to silverwizard

php bin/console.php dbstructure update

As a society we need to contend with the idea of exiling people into the woods

🏴 Greg Sideyr reshared this.

in reply to silverwizard

honestly, fiberglass handled axe a few files, stones, MREs. Give them a small shelter and some books.

So can I volunteer to be exiled?

in reply to Justin Dearing

If you want to go into the woods, many mountains are fairly hard to inhabit, there are places I'm Ireland you could likely hide, and The Yellowstone Zone Of Death!

It's 5 minutes to 5 pm and the sun is gone.

If the Security Operations Center is so good, why doesn't the company have SOC2?

I think I have adhd for a number of reasons, and my psychiatrist agrees with me, especially since I respond the way I do to medication but holy cow do I feel weird that I don't do hobby hopping like other people seem to. I wonder why I seem to be the only one 🤔 😔. I tend to become really into things but then it can last forever, I'm still thinking about ideas for things I had in high school with the feeling of "damn, I wish I could make that work"
in reply to Becky

@Becky I don't have this "hobby hopping" either.. Or at least not to intensely (maybe because of my severe depression).

But you should probably be very happy that you can dive deeper into a hobby. For me, that's indeed a problem.

in reply to hackbyte (friendica) 13HB1

I have intense interest, but whether I actually engage with it is another problem. However, yeah, I do think I'm quite lucky as far as all things go.

I hope you get to do the things sometimes at least tho, because I get how depression can go sometimes ❤️

I think Fediverse search would be a good thing

I think that fundamentally that argument was ended when the WebIndex was created, and living in a post-WebIndex world basically means that searchability is the way that people approach problems and questions. I like the ability to find old thoughts and I like the ability to find old things. And I think that people who dislike it should have the tools to disable it (robots.txt, nobot, and post-autodeletion). But it would be real nice to remember something from four years ago and search it out of the memory hole.

I think about this in context of like, email. If an inbox decided "I will publish every email sent to me" I think that like, that would be fine. However, if a mail relay did that I would be suspicious as hell.

But I think that most Fediverse accounts act more like inboxes than relays. Obviously, if someone were to setup that email inbox, I would definitely think harder about sending email to it than to my friends. And I think that that change is probably the core of the tension where people worry about the fediverse.

I don't understand the people who dislike a generic search tools - and their arguments have never persuaded me - I don't know what I'm missing.

Devin reshared this.

in reply to silverwizard

@silverwizard Oh, I just stumbled on another emergent behavior contributing to the argument against Fediverse-wide search: the need to use elaborate and varied paraphrases when talking about popular topics (like "Beetkoin" or "Elmo") to avoid being harassed by either bots or stans. These also defeat user-defined filters for the wrong reasons.

That's definitely valid

I feel like defederation is the solution to that though - unless, of course, Mastodon.social existed

Considering setup a group riff session of the vendor-provided security training so that we can all hang out and talk security, but it in a way that's more focused and gives deeper learning and a chance for questions, but without feeling formal

Successfully pulled apart an electric train for wooden toy tracks, fixed some contacts on the battery, pulled apart the gearbox, cleaned sand and hair out of the gear, added new oil, and now we have a running train again!

Ug, 2023 feels like it'll be the year of the Linux desktop

Still stuck on Linux for good Steam and GPU support for my gaming computer, and my Surface Tablets I'm using as a portable device apparently have wifi issues on the BSDs, and my work computer needs Linux for the MDM

So I don't have a current BSD desktop! Just 10 VMs and a VM host

I made a wand! Out of a piece of driftwood I found in the summer on the beach. And just like that the snow was gone!

The cheapest package that included the prints I actually wanted also included this monstrosity, with no way to tell them to just not bother with that one.
What am I supposed to do with this?

Happy New Year!

If you want to tell me, I'd love to hear about cool things that happened to people last year, whether it's completing a project, going to a new place or whatever.

Personally we discovered an outdoor amusement park for young kids, which was really fun to go to a few times, especially for their Halloween event

in reply to Becky

I finished my degree! (I didn't quite _graduate_ last year, degrees are issued at convocation in June. But all that's left is paperwork that mostly isn't my responsibility.)
in reply to Dave

W00t!! That's awesome!! Now you are Dave the scholar and university graduate in math! And you did it all before you died 😂 (in reference to all those times I asked you how you were)

I think the thing I find funniest in the world is the reaction of someone else to a pun so bad they can no longer say words

My 1yo and 3yo are wrestling and I start encouraging the 1yo "give 'im the business Rowan!"

And then Shæ jumps under the blanket "No! I don't want the business!"

Cw: favouritism

Thinking about all the harm caused to my siblings and I because both my paternal grandparents and dad had favourite kids. My mom never chose any of us tho, and I will not engage with it either. It makes it really hard for this and other reasons to feel super comfortable having my dad be an active player in the lives of my kids 😔

I think the answer is mostly no, if this wasn't a shitpost you could probably run it with a reverse tunnel

Honestly, you'd need a reverse tunnel, and yeah, few telcos would probably let me

I want to learn programming and I'm trying to find a language to start in.

I want a language I can write a to do program in && something I can easily bounce onto other languages from

Anyone have any thoughts on this

#programmingadvice

in reply to silverwizard

I do want to learn both.... actually I am very much considering this if it's simple to create a to-do list, easy to learn, and will get my feet wet.... my main concern is if it's easily knowledge I can take on to learn other programming languages because really really I want to learn the skills to do any language vs one specific one
in reply to Becky

I think I'm mostly waffling on scheme, even though I think it's pretty and it would work with my brain, is because I don't know if it would make a to-do program that simple..... but it was my university days that I touched it, and early on at that... I hardly remember what I did with it, other than something with drawing shapes

This morning our kids were sick and both managed to get us to feel bad enough for them to let them sleep in our bed

At 6:30 I awoke and put out stockings, and then at 7 our 1yo woke up crying, my wife started to walk him out of the room while I let the 3yo use me as a pillow, sensing my wife was about to step on a stocking I said "Watch out, Santa might have left something there"

The second those words left my mouth, my sleeping soundly three year old sat bolt upright and was awake.

Less than one second from asleep to awake for the day

Do I attempt to make a calendar or practice on krita tonight hmmm 🤔

It feels nice to take a life break tonight, especially after all that went down with my dad this Christmas

Oooooh, I also want to work on those bookmarks now that I have black paint again!!

Libro.fm has been a really good non-amazon addition to my life as a way to listen to a lot of audiobooks but I CLEARLY am not listening enough because I have 2 unused credits now 😶...

A quiet Christmas

Thinking about how quiet this Christmas is. In the past I used to rush around all over the province to see all the family I could this time of year. And this year it feels at a standstill, moving slowly, with nothing on the agenda. I can't imagine going back to the business and even more can't imagine how I could possibly cope with even one large Christmas event through my very developed social anxiety. One day I may have to figure all this out but in the meantime, happy holidays to everyone, but especially those in the quiet stillness

@silverwizard made Christmas muffins but our lil 3.5 year old got a little heavy handed with the green food colouring and poured in a bottle of it
