Are there any video games today with the energy of the Wayfairer series by Becky Chambers? Big, realistic universe, but very small personal conflict?

I want to hop in a freighter and try to make a life in the stars.

Taxinaut is nearly 1.0 now. It's kind of like "what if the prologue to The Fifth Element never ended"

oh right, Before the Green Moon. You want to get on the space elevator to the moon to make your fortune. To even afford a ticket, you have to farm turnfollow.itch.io/before-the-…

FixFox nails the vibe up thru its middle act, I felt it didn't earn its ending though joystickventures.itch.io/fixfo…

Sable. You're going on your coming-of-age pilgrimage. Ride your hoverbike across picturesque sand dunes [which you can catch sand fish in, if you like!] and scavenge junk out of downed freighters to pay your way. store.steampowered.com/app/757…

Diaries of a Spaceport Janitor. Will you ever get out of this spaceport? Might as well be friendly with the incredible assortment of life here, when they'll give you the time of day. sundaemonth.itch.io/diaries-of…

Umurangi Generation. You're a courier with a photography hobby. It seems like maybe you're living through an alien invasion, or something? Mostly that means people won't pay for photos that look like the aliens, or ascended deep-sea jellyfish, or whatever they are. Features some sweet parkour. store.steampowered.com/app/122…

@clayote not at all what I'm looking for today, but this looks really neat. Thank you for sharing it.

Desert Child is kind of a racing game I guess, but has long sequences between races where you repair your bike, eat ramen, see the sights, and talk to a lot of strange people who couldn't make it on Earth and decamped to Mars like you did. It is not exactly shy about basing its world on that of Cowboy Bebop. I don't think you do any bounty hunting, but you can throw races for cash... store.steampowered.com/app/844…

Hmmmm, maybe Times & Galaxy? You're an intern roboreporter working for the titular rag. You're not senior enough to get the important stories, but maybe you can uncover a good human, I mean, sapient interest angle? store.steampowered.com/app/883…

@clayote right now, his obsession is Stardew Valley, but ooblets will enter rotation soon.

Voyageur ... here's how it describes itself:

The Descent Device lets you "fall" towards the center of the galaxy, faster than light, faster than any human being should. On your way, you carry exotic goods, stories, and a crew of outcasts. But only a Voyageur would willingly go on a one-way trip planned by long-dead aliens.

@clayote I remember following along as @bruno was making this one, but it can't recall if I actually got to play it.

Life got complicated around the time it was released.

I will revisit if.

I really enjoyed the Orion trail. That's not what I'm looking for now, exactly, but I remembered it existed.

Oregon Trail in star trek. Very cute.

If you'll forgive the self-promotion, this is what I was going for with my text-based space-exploration game: johnayliff.itch.io/beyond-the-…

@SarraceniaWilds I'm glad I played outer wilds, but it's not what I'm looking for right now.

they’re not new, but “Citizen Sleeper” and “I was a Teenage Exocolonist” are probably the two most Wayfarer-vibes games I’ve ever played.

Is Privateer in the vicinity of what you’re looking for? gog.com/en/game/wing_commander…
in reply to Jess Perkins

@starkos god it's been years since I played a wing commander game.

I don't remember privateer at all, I suppose now is as good a time as any to revisit those games.
