If mastodon were to go to a 5000 character limit, I’m not sure why I wouldn’t just use Tumblr.

Actual coherent ability to see comments & have conversations with those who replied without spamming followers with the entire increasingly unwieldy giant post each time?

...just, uh, speaking from my Tumblr experience. (The tumblr version of a thread is a /nightmare/ for anyone who actually follows the person making the repeatedly updated and reblogged-again-each-time post.)

@fade Oh, god, good point. I had forgotten how terrible Tumblr is for response.

It's honestly why 90% of my use of Tumblr is 'view things that come by' and 8% is 'reblog'; I seldom bother to respond, and almost never post something myself, because it's so damn hard to have a conversation over there. It's the main reason Twitter became my LJ replacement, not Tumblr.

Maybe the fact that many of us are *here* and not *there*?
in reply to Audrey Winter

@audreygwinter So, yes, that’s a factor, but if I think about it too much, I get paralyzed. Too many people went to too many different places, so there’s a good argument for everything in that regard. So, instead, I sort of have to make the decision selfishly, based on usability.

I have been reminded how threading & responding works on Tumblr, and never mind because I don’t hate myself that much.

The big reason not to use Tumblr instead of Mastodon is that Tumblr doesn't support ActivityPub, which means you can't follow/be followed by people ouside the platform. But apparently that's about to change, which would make it a viable alternative.
