If you ever find yourself exposed to a far right Irish blowhard who demands respect for their First Amendment rights, you can ask them why they are trying to declare a national Emergency on the onset of World War II.
@Simon McGarr In Canada we have a legal rule that if someone says they take the 5th they mean they are invoking their rights to counsel and against self-incrimination, which is nice.
@Lúnasa Healy-Rae-Nua @Simon McGarr Oh no! The 5th ammendment is building a bridge to PEI. But if someone says in court or the cops why wanna take the 5th, we don't force them to build a bridge, we let them shut up
I tried pleading the fifth here in Ireland: Me: I plead the Fifth! Garda: That is your right, sir, and be assured, we will not give special consideration to the Catholic Church during the course of this interview.
Me: I plead the Fifth! Plod: Of course, ma'am, let me check the wording on the copy I always carry with me. *pantomimes reaching for his wallet, opening it, removing a small invisible piece of paper, unfolding it, unfolding it, unfolding it, unfolding it, unfolding it, peering at halfway down, down a bit, down a bit, down a bit, down a bit, slaps forehead* We don't have a constitution!
@cdonnellySRE @sothach @silverwizard I think there was a point at the height of the pandemic when the freemen COVID denialist lot were trying to invoke Magna Carta
@IanMoore3000 @sothach @silverwizard Lots of interesting stuff in Magna Carta! Were they invoking Clause 13? I wonder how London handled the Plague in terms of governance...
@cdonnellySRE @sothach @silverwizard All the more bizarre because Ireland is a separate country so I don't think Magna Carta ever applied here (however I am open to correction on that as it might have been incorporated into Irish law at some stage).
@IanMoore3000 @sothach @silverwizard Oh gosh, I thought you meant the UK freemen COVID denialist lot, not the Ireland freeman COVID denialist lot. Even worse!
Plus they would have to prove that they were in fact a Baron or the Catholic Church for it to apply to them, whereas they were most likely smelly, unwashed serfs or peasants.
As a journalist I have a special fondness for the second amendment, which allows for minor editing to correct typos and clean up ambiguities in the original prose.

It's possible they were thinking of Irish Magna Carta, although the smelly peasant problem would still apply.
