i should probably tell youtube not to recommend me this thing but i'm kinda happy to just have it sit there in my side bar so i can look at it and think, "sucks to suck, lmao"
youtube thumbnail: "I failed (why academia sucks)"

"my dream died, and now i'm here" by sabine hossenfelder

@Alex P. πŸ‘Ή I keep seeing this go round and I'm constantly "yes, maybe you should have been good at stuff"

Academia sucks, but her failing is the greatest endorsement of it

Alex P. πŸ‘Ή reshared this.

@Hypolite Petovan @Alex P. πŸ‘Ή She's a physicist who became a youtuber and posts anti-climate-change and LLMs-are-intelligent posts, I basically see her as I'd see a Thunderf00t or whatever, but because she has a PhD people act like she's a science communicator.

@silverwizard @hypolite
lol, i didn't know she went full crank after the transphobe thing

"once you terf-post you can never post normal again" theory wins again :o

@hypolite @silverwizard
she makes a bunch of ok science videos but also tried to both-sides transphobia with a bunch of dumbass handwringing about trans women's advantages in sports or whatever

@silverwizard @hypolite
it wasn't even terfery per se, it was just… really fucking stupid?

and clearly out-of-left-field / out-of-your-depth type shit, like why would you make yourself the arbiter of this shit you clearly don't understand

@Alex P. πŸ‘Ή @Hypolite Petovan I watched the video and it was a lot of "I'm smart so put up with me" stuff mixed in with the standard criticisms of academia
wait, so she has a PhD but still failed?
@Wildheart_Baby
i'm not watching it but i'm guessing she got squeezed out of some field where only X% of the academics actually get to do the big-ticket significant research (particle physics e.g.)

if you want to watch videos of former academics i suggest this one instead

(her 30-minute summary of how palestine was colonized is very good even if you don't want to learn anything about the politics of astronomy, imo)

that section about Palestine was interesting, and the bit about sending Jewish ppl back to Germany in 1943 was sickening, it feels like the same ppl were probably later using the holocaust as justification for atrocities against Palestinians.
