I can understand if new admins don't know that Soapbox is bigotware and they'll be defederated nearly instantly for running it...

but Soapbox is bigotware and you'll be defederated almost instantly for running it

reshared this

What signs should I look for to tell if an instance is running it?
@drazisil it says something like "This instance is running Soapbox-FE"
I don’t know anything about this soapbox..but i do trust you. What is it?
@cenobyte also curious about this, couldn’t find the info on a Google search. Tho I did see some purposely innocuous language “puts power in the hands of the people” etc
@postamericankiwi @cenobyte it's an alternative frontend, commonly used on Pleroma or Akkoma instances, written by a raging transphobe
@postamericankiwi Ugh, thanks for the info. I'd never support that :( (or run it)
Just out of curiosity, does it have actual anti features? Alex Gleason is a hell of a red flag though
ok, that's reasonable. I definitely (personally) wouldn't punish an admin for using it, especially in this wave of new people, but legit.

Was worried there was actual malicious software
Any why an instance running a frontend which doesn't (shouldn't at least) affect interaction with other instances would get banned for it?
@alex Soapbox? Yes definitely.
The question was "why" :)

I mean I don't even know which frontend other instances use because I don't go to them.
@alex because someone who’s willing to run software written by a transphobe that runs the major transphobe instance is not the sort of person that many people want to associate with
Well, that's weirdly strange.

Free software is free software, things people use it for is what matters.
@alex yeah weird that associating with bigots gets you marked as a bigot huh
No, it is weird that when you use something absolutely neutral by its nature some people see it as association with things completely unrelated to you - just because someone else touched the same thing.

In fact I tend to think that such approach doesn't only makes everyone's lives harder but also empowers bad actors by implying their significance.

Just my opinion of course.
@alex you do know that you don't have to be completely wrong, *and* you don't have to be completely wrong in my mentions too? It's true!

You can learn to not have excruciatingly bad takes, and learn to not bother people on the internet with your excruciatingly bad takes.
To each their own I suppose :)
good to know, was in the process of setting up an instance w/ soapbox 😅

Any non-bigotware alternatives? Looking for something with a user-friendly interface (most instance members have limited tech know-how)
i don't know what it is but thanks for the heads up
also that was a dead serious comment, I am a new server admin as of 14 days ago and basically all I have done is register as an LLC, install 3.52, get insurance, set up DMCA concern handling, upgrade to v4, and let 'er rip. Haven't sussed out the whole ecosystem by a long shot, this is a year-or-more long experiment for me. I've run web servers of some kind since the late 90s but I've never run something that allowed user content unless you count a warez FTP in 1997
@voxnihilist It's an alternative frontend usually used on Pleroma that looks nice but it's made by a raging transphobe (who also runs the major transphobe instance, spinster), so anyone using it gets the Bigot By Association flag real quick
noted, thanks! I have a lot to learn about this ecosystem.
Wow it took me a while to notice that is based on the Gab code, maybe you could have given further explanation.
I had been considering forking it for my own project. Bad idea?
