A writer friend just passed, and mailing lists and social media are full of folks saying how kind and generous they were. Which they were!

I'm old enough that my first thought was: one day those messages will be about me.

Do say nice things to people while they're still alive. (Other people, that is, not me.)

knightly reshared this.

not a chance, I'm telling you that you were helpful and generous when my email server died and your book wasn't actually released yet and you let me see an early peek at it anyway

this is a good excuse to remind you that you are great and I feel very fortunate to get to share this weird corner of the internet with you :dragon_happy:

and I apologise that I'm sure sincere compliments are torture for you but it needed to be said!

If nothing else, you write exactly the books that fall neatly into two categories.

Books that need to be written and books that nobody should ever be subjected to writing.

My nice thing to say about Mike Lucas while he’s still alive is that his book Absolute OpenBSD made me want to learn how to use OpenBSD as a daily driver.

Whether or not his having done this to me continues to be regarded as a nice thing remains to be seen.
