Don't want Discord, and Matrix is a complicated, expensive mess. What else could I use for @osnews?=

I like the idea of IRC, but it's not (?) encrypted, and doesn't support any account authentication to make sure people are who they say they are. Ripe for abuse.

there's IRC over TLS, and there are ways to authenticate users on the server, but it might not be what you're looking for

@nina_kali_nina Gotta be something even an idiot like me can set up and run. I actually don't even know how hard it is to run a quality IRC server.

IRC can work over TLS (port 6697 typically), but it's not E2E. Also, for auth, SASL can be used.

@oleksandr Another upside to IRC I haven't considered yet is how accessible it is - works on pretty much any platform.
