Want a hot #Feditip ?

Keep your current handle, but look into #SelfHosting any #Fediverse instance. Keep your current #Mastodon and add on a unique experience that you control completely.

Hell, even #Pixelfed if you're really into pictures. F Instagram.

Check out #SpaceHost if you are less tech savvy. I'm trying to figure out how to #SelfHost a #Calckey instance on a #Rock5 8gb #SBC #ArtFed

Hopefully mine will be mobile and off-grid.

I'm adding a #Gemini capsule and possibly #SolarProtocol too.

@Hank G ☑️ @Sir Rochard 'Dock' Bunson I assume it means, don't abandon one account, and maintain a second presence

@Sir Rochard 'Dock' Bunson @Hank G ☑️ I love Friendica for being able to control other endpoints
I used to have a Diaspora, pump.io, and GNU Social setup and controlled by this instance, though over time all died

And I would love to see a PeerTube and PixelFed connector

Don't sleep on tried and true techniques like CW aka #MorseCode and #HAMRadio

There's voice and digital options now.

I use that NATO? phonetic alphabet everytime I have to give information over the phone, and my GF rolls her eyes every single time.

There's a reason those specific words are used. None of them sound exactly alike. So there's no confusing "vee" V with "tee" T, and monikers like T as in Tom aren't disambiguous enough.

waiting for Mastodon to include groups, or managed Friendica (for the same reasons) The people I want to prise from FB require private groups.

Meanwhile, I'm federating my WP blog(s)

same. Just have an amateur license which is only useful on the local repeaters which are full of old guys talking about their medical issues.

absolutely to but that's not the thing. What is, if I'm going to start an instance with potential a hundred members I want at least one other person that can admin as well as a mod or two. In case something happens to me.

Which means a managed host, so I don't have to find someone I'm willing to grant su on a LAMP rig, among other things. Mastodon currently does not support groups, and i don't know of any hosting company that does managed Frendica

I've heard that too (I follow Chris) but firstly it's a matter of when, and I guess secondly explaining the Fediverse is not Mastodon :P

sweet. Let me know f you need a beta, I can probably scrounge a few people together

yeah, I mean it would be useful if something ever happened, and I will keep up the license. I am thinking of getting a digital radio and playing around with that. And I occasionally connect to repeaters in other parts of the world using echolink on my phone and talk to people and that is cool as well I guess.

Andreas, DJ3EI, he/him

Using your #hamradio callsign as a publicly viewable handle on the internet can be regarded as cool as well as scary, for the same reason: It removes anonymity and makes you as a person much more easily findable.

In some non-EU countries, as I've recently learned, the government agency in charge of licensing will even mandatorily PUBLISH YOUR ADDRESS, no questions asked. 😱

It is no better in the EU countries. Germany, for example, offers both a callsign search and a simple PDF list of all registered operators. Both contain full names and addresses.

yeah, but I am not going to do that as all it would take is a simple uls search to find my name and address.
in reply to Kitsunesensei

Those publications do contain addresses, but not of all licensed operators. You are specifically asked, and only if you agree, is your address published. That is a consequence of European data protection laws.

Most German #hamradio ops agree to their address being published, but not all.

that just sounds like a discord clone to me. The point of radio is that is goes over the airwaves.

Pixelfed can't be any more difficult to use than Instagram. Even a rusty lawnmower is easier to use than Instagram...

Thanks! No, I got my marine operators license before I joined the coast guard. It was loads of fun. I'd love to learn to use HAM though. My grandfather had one and stayed in touch with people all around the world.
