You know, I was thinking about cursed gear in RPGs. Why does it exist?

I mean, yeah, it creates tension when the player is grabbing loot, but why IN WORLD?

Do wizards routinely create joke gear and randomly throw it in dungeons? Did a ghost settle in? What's the explanation for cursed gear?

This is a lot more interesting to me than the gear itself. Imagine the ramifications!

@Craig P a lot of game systems I've seen have curses result from enchanting failures, and that outrightly makes sense. To become a skilled enchanter you gotta make a lot of cursed and hard to destroy stuff that ends up around.

my go-to headcanon is that teenage wizards thought it was funny to make absurd things on their break

@Craig P It is not hard for me to imagine spiteful wizards making cursed gear they would never have a use for (swords, armors, bows, etc...).

@Craig P
Frustrated adventurer: But why did you make this?
Spiteful wizard: Because I can.
