So many people are on fediverse instances related to their profession that it feels like we're medieval English villagers with last names matching our jobs.

Dick Baker? He's a baker. Jane Carpenter? She's a carpenter.

dick@infosec.exchange? He's in infosec. jane@hci.social? She does HCI.

@KG_Jewell just like in Medieval English village, every 20th person has an unpronounceable last name that means "mossy embankment" in Pictish, and no one knows where it came from or why it's still used.

I have two jobs: working in tech and being gay. one pays a lot better but the other has job security!

“Prodromou (Greek: Προδρόμου) is a Greek surname. It is the genitive form of prodromos (Greek: πρόδρομος), which means forerunner. ”

I have been ruminating on that problem for weeks. I've noticed some timelines that already seem to reflect reflect a parochial clustering. I suppose it's to be expected in this early Fedi stage, but I feel we may be underestimating the positive impact of that melting pot/blender effect that Twitter could had. But I think we can evolve beyond it with tools we haven't thought of yet.

my weird irl last name means "little thumb", so perhaps "mastodon gamedev place" is an improvement in some ways, as I believe my thumbs to be at least average in most respects

@shoq I have no idea what either of those things are, but I’ll take your word for it. :)

to be honest Infosec related instances are pretty much the only ones I can think of that fit this mold. Most of the others that I am aware of, including the one that I’m on, I focused on people’s hobbies, and there I say it passions. I like to think of it as “my work is my work, but fussing around with old computers is where my heart is” :-)

I’m not mindly or social lol. The nerd instance had too many posts that weren’t in English that it was hard for me to use that community. I actually didn’t even look for a “scientist” instance. I use social media to get away from thinking 😊

pretty much why I did self.social instead of a regional or subject area instance...

I am in fact an iOS developer so I think you’re onto something here

I chose geographic location. Federation still means I can hang out with anyone 😍😁

Then I am exceedingly happy with my choice of server! I love it - and now I won't be able to unsee adorable little Mastodon medieval villages!!
