The two protocols I need better tools for are RSS and IRC

I hate irssi and I don't want a webapp for RSS

Why do I hate irssi? I dunno, feels wrong and I wish I knew. Every 3-4 years I try to convince myself I'm being stupid, read docs go "that makes sense" and then end up hating it
should I build an RSS reader in pure Zenity
if I just take a nice little PubSub (not Kafka but Kafka) I can just publish items to it and have all my devices ack them...
@silverwizard: weechat for irc? Newsbeuter for RSS?

@BB :verified_cool: for some reason my brain assumed weechat was a bloated gui... I think it was crossed with psi (xmpp) or something.

For RSS I want something GUI since it is likely to contain images, but I might think about newsboat and w3m or something a while

@silverwizard I've been happy-ish with Friendica as an RSS reader. I generally understand not wanting to have something as a web app, though for a thing meant to link me to web pages, I can live with it. It'd be nice to be able to get a nice summary in the terminal, though. I thought about writing my own RSS reader back in the day, but it turns out that "really simple syndication" is not exactly "simple".

@Jonathan Lamothe I miss most things that pass me by, I follow a lot of people ›.‹

I've also written probably a half dozen RSS readers/makers before, so I'm not entirely worried

@silverwizard Writers are fairly trivial, readers are just complicated enough (due to the wildly differing possible formats) that it was just easier to find something existing that did the job than it was to reinvent the wheel.
@Jonathan Lamothe yeah, I normally use castget and rawdog these days, but both are wrong
the thing about these protocols is they're both protocols I use over netcat a lot so all the tools feel limiting and weird

@hotsoup RSS to an IRC room would be great, if I had a good rss

IRC over RSS sounds like a bad enough idea for me to take it seriously
