Okay, so I've recommended pinafore.social as an alternative UI for Mastodon on the web, and then elk.zone (which is in alpha, but very clean), but also someone recommended Soapbox and... i think that might be my new favorite. UPDATE: people have highlighted the creator of Soapbox has some horrifying views & people may associate you with those views for using it... So... be aware. I'm continuing my search...

Still wish one of these clean interface options would implement multi-column though...

Just a warning - some people in the fediverse think that people using it are bigots because the author is a bigot

It annoys me - since needing to know everything about a piece of software before using it is weird and dumb - but

Alex Gleason is an old time fediverse villain, and this isn't the first time people tried to block entire projects that he's touched - but this is the first times it's a project he leads at least,

I saw this announcement scroll by yesterday about mastodeck.com - an advanced fully customizable web client for Mastodon.

See if Sengi fits the bill. I'm also a fan of Soapbox, but after installing a Calckey server, I'm never going back.

in reply to Iggy

@skroobler @soapbox@gleasonator.com yeah, I didn't like Sengi or Tooty very much. Calckey is great, but still very early in development. I'm following some of the forks and hoping there will be something solid to rely on soon...

Soapbox is run by a right wing anti-Trans sleazebag, and for many ppl on here, even seeing someone using it is grounds to question their politics and whether to federate with them, just FYI.
in reply to Ross Grady

@rossgrady @skroobler yeah, someone else was just explaining that as well... that's... not great. I had no idea.

@trunks is in alpha but moving fast. The app has QTs and it's very slick. It looks like he's getting ready to put out a web interface that has columns.

I think someone was trying to make a tweetdeck esque version. mastodon.social/@mastodeck

Mike, since you know so many of these Fedi tools, do you know of a way to analyze (de)federation networks? gleasonator.com seems to be the second time I run into an instance ban on mas.to, and I can't immediately see any reason why such a ban exists.

oops, a design error (the author mention doesn't resolve for me, btw)
in reply to Osma A

@osma as i've learned... the creator of soapbox has some... not great views, and that likely has resulted in the defederation. And, people have noted that some servers are defederating those who use it.
in reply to Mike Masnick ✅

@osma but also many instances will list out blocked instances and sometimes say why on their admin/about pages.
in reply to Mike Masnick ✅

Your post, above, contained a link for Soapbox, and I actually signed in there but somehow got signed out. And now your post does not show the link. Could you please re-post it?

@osma yeah. i don't disagree. and if you need to know the politics of everyone whose software you use, that becomes... tricky very fast. but, just giving you the explanation as I understand it.

@osma yup. will be interesting to see how the norms here change over time, but I agree. Feels like it would be useful for their to be some readable documentation/history.

There are some nice things in the Soapbox UI but sadly it doesn't seem to respect the "slow" setting in my preferences, so it's back to standard web Mastodon for me.
in reply to Mike Masnick ✅

Have you seen mastodeck.com/ yet? Seems a very clean tweet deck like implementation but is currently in closed beta but I think the author was looking for more people to test it out and give feedback
in reply to Nick

@mryiff people keep sending it to me. I pinged the author to see if I can get into the beta.
@Nick

@mryiff
Me imagining the panic over at Mastodeck:

"Sure our product is beta ready, but is it Masnick beta ready?"

in reply to Kerim Friedman 傅可恩

@Kerim Friedman 傅可恩 @Mike Masnick ✅ Just like how Akkoma was forked off Pleroma, partly for the sake of getting a layer of separation from Gleason, the same was done with Mangane forking off from Soapbox. Mangane also has some Akkoma-specific features if it detects that as your backend.

I'm using manganapp.vercel.app/ with my Pleroma account and think it's neat. Mangan is a "fork" of Mangane, but the difference is four lines of Polish translation.

Note that Pinafore was retired. Someone created a fork Semaphore, but that soon slowed down too.

in reply to Kerim Friedman 傅可恩

@kerim either the default masto multi column (which has gotten better) or elkzone. I also like Mastodeck.
