#ScoutingUK Monday came around again!

Tonight we spent time getting ready for our indoor camp this coming weekend, getting equipment lists, fetching all equipment we’ll need from the hit, and going over what they need to bring.

Finished up with a game of “carrot in the box” except it was “juice box in the donation bucket”.

Now to draft a list of songs for the campfire.

What are your favourite #campfire songs?

#ScoutingUK

Speaking of #campfire songs - I’ll be recording a few more for a certain YouTube channel this week, too.

in reply to CheekyMcB

@hischeekiness I’ve offered to do a handful or more /
So I suspect there will be lots of takes of the first, and by the last will be fairly happy in a couple

Fingers crossed!

#ScoutingUK #campfire

Spent about two and a half hours recording nine songs for the Scoutadelic YouTube channel this morning.

There’s probably less than 20 minutes of recorded audio - so someone can try and guess how many takes there were!

If campfire songs are your thing then keep an eye out over the coming weeks.

in reply to Ben Lavery-Griffiths

I'm more of a skits person. But persuading the scouts to stand up and do this is like pulling teeth.
in reply to Keith

@keefeglise skits weren’t a huge part of my Scouting experience, but I know a handful.

What are your favourite skits?

in reply to Ben Lavery-Griffiths

The parachute/rucksack one. And the gross incontinent dog in a box one.
in reply to Keith

@keefeglise I know neither!

I’m thinking of doing the campfire billy can - contains different drinks for a bunch of people, but contains a surprise at the end.

I also love the magnifying/enlarging machine, especially if you have similar looking siblings a few years apart.

in reply to Ben Lavery-Griffiths

@keefeglise I’d love to see those skits, I’ve never seen any in person, I only recall them doing songs at the (few) Scout Camps I’ve been to.
in reply to Keith

@keefeglise Do either of you know a skit that would involve dressing up as a Guide Leader for? I’ve heard about one being done at a Scout Gang Show.
in reply to CheekyMcB

@hischeekiness @keefeglise it’s not one that I’ve heard of…

We didn’t do many stunts/skits when I was a YP, mostly songs.

in reply to Ben Lavery-Griffiths

@keefeglise Did you do skits at Cubs? I’ve been getting the impression they are introduced at Scouts, mainly as age plays a part in their suitability.
in reply to CheekyMcB

@hischeekiness @keefeglise no, I do recall doing “little green ball” and one where three people are brushing their teeth in Cubs.

I think with skits you need to have confident YP who get the joke they are trying to convey.
Looking through some of the David Saint books, I still don’t get why they are funny!

Maybe @keefeglise will shed some light, but I suspect there’s something about momentum - if you do skits it’s easy, but maybe it’s hard to start making them a part of your fire?

in reply to Ben Lavery-Griffiths

@hischeekiness Our scouts are happy to do them in the hut in front of the other patrols. Elsewhere, too self conscious. In fact that is less true of the younger ones so you might have more joy there. The enlarging machine would work with a leader taking the main role. The invisible bench would work with cubs...
in reply to Keith

@keefeglise @hischeekiness actually this is often the same with singing - I’ve found Cubs and Beavers tend to be a lot more enthusiastic.
Scouts need a lot more warm up time in my experience.

#campfire songs drafted:

1. Campfire's Burning (not my favourite, but traditional in the district)
2. BP Spirit
3. Kookaburra (Scout and Guide versions)
4. My Bonnie lies over the oecean
5. Yellow Bird
< Billy can skit >
6. You'll never get to heaven
7. Rattlin' bog
8. Zombie came to tea
9. Canoe song
10. Sunshine Mountain -OR- Push the damper in

I've got about an hour, so the list on the night is likely to be different.

in reply to Ben Lavery-Griffiths

I’ve heard Bonnie, Zombie is a variation of Penguin, think I’ve heard Sunshine, heard you do Kookaburra, I’ve never understood Campfire’s Burning as it seems too short and simple and to another song’s tune.
in reply to CheekyMcB

@hischeekiness I think Campfire's Burning is kind of OK - it is short, but means most people pick it up quickly and you get people singing early on - plus it can be sung as a round to lengthen it...
I just feel it's a bit dull!

The rendition of Sunshine Mountain is slightly different than this one: youtube.com/watch?v=TAJNB6uqLp…
But it's a good song because you do many iterations and gradually bring more people into the campfire circle to dance and sing - at the end everyone is on their feet.
