It’s been a rough few weeks for Canada’s Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, who will be stepping down next month. But tonight he gave a powerful speech that should make all Canadians proud. It wasn’t carried by American television. But my American friends, I hope you will watch it and share it. And understand that for us, this betrayal is about more than economics. youtu.be/xiaACQpFUfE #Canada #tariffs #cdnpoli #t

Five minutes later he tells us that he's imposing the same tariffs in Canada. So he's putting Canadian jobs in jeopardy, increasing household costs for Canadians, and causing Canadians to experience the same consequences he's warning US citizens about.

On day 3, Justin and Pierre and Jagmeet and Paul should agree to have the GG reconvene Parliament explicitly to drop the DRM laws Canada enacted in exchange for the free trade treaty the US is now violating. This would harm the financial interests of US oligarchs like Musk and Bezos (as by letting Canadians legally jailbreak Teslas and Audible books), and it would create a lot of much-needed high-value work for Canadians, and a new set of products and services to distribute globally (except to the US, where those would remain illegal).
Even if we're not going to heed @pluralistic regarding tariffs, we should enact his recommended anti-DRM reprisal, and we should do it tomorrow if not today. Don't give them time to hedge against it. Every day US oligarch's net wealth is not declining, so long as tariffs or other US trade aggression against Canada is in effect, is a day the Government of Canada is derelicting their duty to Canadians.

Not a day should go by, so long as the sanctions are in place, that Canada (in coordination with as many of the Commonwealth and EU and other major trade partners are willing, or on our own if necessary) fails to enact another policy taking billions in recurring revenue away from Elon Musk and his ilk.
Tomorrow if not today, scrap DRM protection (either altogether, or for anti-competitive uses abusing copyright law for things which aren't really about copyright). The next day, enact comprehensive #rightToRepair and #rightToOwn laws. The next day, fund jail-breaking projects or open-source competitors to major US corporations' web applications and other software: particularly, sponsor Canadian, Commonwealth, EU, or other willing partner countries' citizens (and non-American residents') labour on those projects, and lay out a short-term plan for beginning to adopt those projects in place of US-made products and services. The next day, fund whichever of the preceding to we didn't fund the previous day. Each of the following days, support the African countries and many develop nations in the UN tax convention, and enact one of the Tax Justice Network's policies, in cooperation with partner countries, so taxes evaded by US oligarchs and their corporations can be calculated and taxed elsewhere.
Withing a week, announce development and training partnerships with Japanese or South Korean or EU or Commonwealth allies for a new reusable rocket system, to compete with SpaceX and Boeing. Within another week, announce development and training partnerships for a new fifth-generation fighter to compete with the F-22 and F-35.
Do not let another day go by, while the sanctions are in effect, that Elon Musk and all Trump's other oligarchs do not have at least the first and second derivatives of their net worth decline as a consequence.
To that end, Justin and Pierre must park their personal differences, self-interest, and political tribalism, and put the Canada first: Canada before Justin, Canada before Pierre, Canada before any party. Pierre must agree to forestall an election, so long as Parliament devotes all its time to counteracting the US trade war, and Justin must agree to recall Parliament, so they can all stop wasting Canadians' time and money and letting US oligarchs out-manoeuvre our government.

Just remember, MS, Apple, Meta, Bezos and Musk are from the US and who the hell knows what they are able/willing to do, not only in case of cloudservices.
That bunch of Oligarchs based in the US have quite a range of ways to act on their hands.😬

Meanwhile, we should be coordinating anti-trade-war agreements with as other countries as we can. The EU should be open to that right now, and the rest of the Commonwealth is undoubtedly in the future target list as well, so let's get on that. Solidarity isn't just for individuals: it works for countries too, so long as we get enough of the global market on side. #cdnpoli #cdnpolitics
