This just baffles me (seen on Tumblr).

Don't people remember that as bad as Musk screwed it up, Twitter was *still a garbage dump* before he bought it? Do people remember when they tried to sell it a few years before and it fell through because there were *too many Nazi accounts*?

Gamergate was carried out in large part on Twitter. Large scale harassment campaigns. They periodically did something about the worst of the white supremacists, but it never lasted, and many operated with impunity.

What exactly has Bluesky done to proactively prevent the same from happening on the new service? Anything?

Yeah, it's shiny and new and familiar-ish. But that tarnish is gonna wear off fast, I'd wager, and the new social media smell will give way to more rank odours.

I've seen a lot of justifications that Jack isn't the CEO, he's just a board member. No influence at all.

Which I'm sure it BS and he's got a lot to do with it regardless of title.

in reply to The Book of Kels

@The Book of Kels The worst is the argument that the CEO is a woman and therefore claiming that Jack is in power or Bluesky is just another twitter is misogyny (this is an actual argument I've seen).

It's very frustrating isn't it. If Jack picked the people then they will reflect Jack.

@silverwizard

It's the only place where I could sell my books, due to the massive, hard right swing of most platforms and that being where my audience has gone.

*smh* It's a total mess. I do much better without algorithmic suppression.

I've not heard anything to indicate that Bluesky has done anything making it worth consider them to be "good". While I'm not passing judgement, I'm also not that likely to hold off too long before doing so (as with Threads).

I don't it either, I left before the Musk takeover simply because Twitter always felt like talking into a void for me. I never felt the urge to post anything there ever again. I probably should make an account on Bluesky to keep a professional presence everywhere and possibly follow some people I lost contact with, but this is really the only online space I care about at the moment.

@sacha

I know exactly how you feel. Every time I posted something over there I'd get exactly zero response, and yet as soon as I came here it was like I'm having conversations! People are engaging with me and I with them! This is great!

And there weren't even nearly as many people then, only a few months after Mastodon started. Many waves of newbies since then, and it's even more of the same.

I left Twitter before Musk took over because it was always like “Hey remember that far right influencer you blocked? Have a look at this tweet by him that someone screenshotted!”
