it'd be cool if someone could invent Trillian/gaim/Pidgin for the social media era.
like one feed that merges my dashboard/feed and notifications from like, tumblr/cohost/mastodon.

I've always assumed that was the ideal goal of ActivityPub. Of course that requires all the various platforms to actually use it properly.

@Keab42 yeah.

I tend to prefer the aggressive support from software that doesn't care if a given site supports this API or that.

there's always API zero: pretend to be a web browser and scrape the shit

there's an app by some big app company for that, they just did a kickstarter & raised huge amounts of money some how

But could you avoid it being some sort of clunky Electron bloatware, like meetfranz.com/ ?
in reply to Nelson

@skyfaller electron bloatware sounds better than keeping 4+ tabs open and cycling between them

@Foone🏳️‍⚧️ Friendica does this, speaks diaspora, zot, ostatus, activitypub, twitter, tumblr, and bluesky (some need addons), give the serveran API key for the addons and you have all the socials in one spot
in reply to silverwizard

@silverwizard It’s the other way around, some of Mike’s projects condescend to support additional protocols beyond Zot, like Hubzilla and Zap off the top of my head.

That's kinda what Windows Phone's People Hub had, but companies hated it because it meant their apps wouldn't be used as much so Microsoft made it just deep link to their apps when a post was opened from it. I don't think it had notifications, though.

fraidycat seems to have died, but the extension may still work. it's more of a rss thing but i think it can talk to some social medias

Project Tapestry by @Iconfactory Anyone can make plugins to pull from different sources, but has a bunch built in.

Way back RealMac had a program called Socialite that merged all the social media feeds of the day and it was really nice to get everything in one (chronologically ordered) feed

wakest ⁂ reshared this.

Tumblr I've never gotten into (too post-millennial?); cohost just sounds like people trying to re-invent Twitter (already had that, clearly something operated by a single company is as bad an idea today as it was back then); If neither bothers to release APIs to use (or even have actual timelines for potential release), why bother supporting them?
