Funny thing, I made a coffee earlier & I realised the milk went out of date on the 21st, I smelled it & it was fine (I can normally smell it going off a day or 2 before my wife, I have a sensitive nose) I tasted it & it tasted fine. How has this milk gone so far beyond its use by date?

The best before is always going to be an estimate based on the average safe life of the type of milk. So different batches, in different fridges may last longer.

I'm used to it happening with my fridge with lots of items, probably because I live on my own so the number of times the door is opened is lower than say, a family of four.

Was the milk carton/bottle still sealed? I've found out sometimes lasts longer if left sealed.

@abcoates nope! It's been open pretty much since we got it on the 17th I think? I know it can happen, I was just a bit surprised!

I've noticed my milk going past a time or two when I know as a kid it was always right on the dot or slightly before.... I wonder if they changed the standard they use or something

@Becky @🇪🇺 Desert Wind 🇪🇺 These dates are made to avoid liability for poisoning, so they are set as early as possible. Most products are safe for consumption past this date. Especially for non-dairy, these dates are set by a panel of consumers who go by taste, so it isn’t even related to any microbiology.

@hypolite @firefly_lightning I know, I was just surprised! Funny you mention microbiology, my best mate is a microbiologist, he works on vaccines now but used to do microbiological test on milk!
