It's not like we can expose anything. The masks are off. We all know where they stand and what they're doing. And even if we expose more, information dissemination won't change anything. We are at the point of going kinetic. The "hacker uprising" will be over radio, not the Internet.
@cR0w Okay, but civil disobedience of the harmless variety is what I'm talking about. Like, why isn't Musk doing his Nazi salute being projected on government buildings throughout DC, or other major cities? Or things to get under POTUS's skin? This stuff isn't hard to do, and I guess I would have expected to see more of it. Like Turk182 type shit.
Ah, I get it. I jumped over that level and then some. The technical people I know have stepped back with the understanding that shit's bad short term so preparations are made for longer term "civil disobedience" ( quotes for a reason ). Another difficulty is organizing when so many "hackers" are quietly ( or not so quietly ) in support of the regime. Trust is difficult but critical. That takes time.
@cR0w could it also be the intended fear working? As in: If you pull even these harmless stunts, there will likely be cops all too happy to fuck shit up, consequences be damned. Or is that what you meant with bad in the short term? (these questions from a technical person only recently around in hacker circles, and not from the US).
@crypticcelery That's entirely possible. It's a large country with a lot of people and I'm not going to pretend to understand what all is going on. My point was that while I agree with Brian in that more publicly visible civil disobedience would be a good thing, there are plenty of "hackers" doing less visible things to prepare for the expected long term oppression by the regime.
@BrianKrebs @cR0w We've seen the hacked TVs playing the video of Trump sucking Musk's toes, and the repeated vandalism of the DOGE website - but I think the lack of response put some cold water on that.
@dobby1kenobi Systems, sure. But I know there is a ton of work that goes into securing the networks, despite the efforts of the vendors to just make things easy for themselves.
@cR0w True. But networks are built up by interconnected systems (vulnerable and not vulnerable). At some point in time all the attacker would need is influence in the network π€
@dobby1kenobi Agreed. I was speaking specifically to the networks being an afterthought. It's true of utilities historically, and unfortunately still many now, but many have at least been trying to build and harden their networks around what they now know is a fragile, juicy center. That doesn't mean they're necessarily successful, but it's not as much an afterthought as it used to be.

Doesn't start any interaction without also injecting paranoia at minimum.

The real revolution will come when Computer Science grows up enough to embody that title.
