In my quest to provide novel, apple-related posts, I've upgraded my approach with a video! Behold the powerful, yet simple, mechanical device that peels, cores, and slices apples quickly and reliably! Which will lead to apple sauce.

Bob Jonkman reshared this.

I have seen peelers and corers but never one together. That's pretty brilliant.
@steveportigal And it’s a decades-old design! And yeah, brilliant and does what it does very well. It’s a joy to use.
I was definitely flashing back to Black Creek Pioneer Village when I watched your little vid

That peeler/slicer/corer make short work of today's batch of apples being prepped for apple sauce.

Such a beautiful apple. I hope you share the scion wood around this winter. It would be a shame if the variety died out.
@ml That’s a great idea that never occurred to me. I guess we could find someone interested at/via one of the local universities.

You can also just offer it to fruit enthusiast groups. In the US that would be CRFG and NAFEX. I think NAFEX has Canadian members as well, but I don't know if they hold scion exchanges.

Sean Myles at Dalhousie probably already has the variety, but he may be able to suggest places that would be interested in it. https://www.dal.ca/faculty/agriculture/plant-food-env/faculty-staff/our-faculty/sean-myles.html

You can also just share it to local friends/gardeners/parks.

With what's going on with climate change, it's even more important to share germplasm widely, as long as it's done safely (clean material, not shared across borders without virus/pest inspection).

The areas where we can successfully grow a given thing are shifting so one way to find out what's working for now is to try it in as many feasible locations as possible.

FYI cooks illustrated has a great recipe that incorporates the peels & cores https://www.americastestkitchen.com/recipes/11191-applesauce (lmk if you want a screenshot)
@cam_dp Not all of our apples are as pristine as the that one. I often need to cut stuff out. πŸ˜€
Got one of those too. They are brilliant. Also handy for apple cakes/tarts.
These really work. Had one for years.
