If AI replaced your current job in the IT industry (developer, sysadmin, infosec, etc.), what job would you switch to? Do you have any other additional skills beyond computers?

I write novels. I don't make much money off them, but always hope to change that.

The kids think I should start a food truck. I've wondered if my area could support an arcade bar (this is not so much of a hypothetical for me--if anyone needs a software development manage or back end programmer..)

fixing bikes. I worked in a bike shop before, and I can very much recommend it (if you do not need to make a lot of money).

Start a consulting biz focused on undoing screw ups by AI.
Charge stupid money because I’d have to take on technical debt AND deal with the assholes who decided to go with AI.

Or, make artisanal breads and sell it to the spouses of corporate bigwigs at inflated prices.

I'm of an age that I do computers simply because it was easy and people would pay me the most for it. I suspect a lot of my peers my age didn't expect to end up being computer programmers. Of the top of my head, here are the majors of classmates of mine who are now computer programmers:
* Physics
* Math
* American Studies
* Philosophy
* History
* English

I'd probably go for my second choise from when I was choosing a high school profile: carpentry with focus on wooden based roofs. But I'd have to do some exams/certifications first I guess.

Woodworking, I was doing of before programming and I can keep it up after if need be. Farming is close second, and not just for the meme.

I can eat unhealthy amounts of bacon. So I'll probably become an eater if that is a profession ...

I've already given up hope for being hired by a tech company, so I'm streaming on Twitch because I play lots of video games.

if? It happened to me . Now I’m in the hvac industry, though I’m teaching at a trade school at the moment.

I’d teach others to cook and how much a good meal needs you to be at the center of yourself. And I’d cook for others.

I'll move into the electricity/energy sector although I think IT will never end now. From microcontrollers to NPUs it all requires IT skills

Well, if AI takes over IT as a whole - we all fucked and no other job will remain in next 5 years, only art, so I'm going to write books.

welp, I'm a graphic designer, web developer, and a marketing / communications specialist. I'd probably use it to automate tasks I already perform and become a consultant. 😆

I have many other skills, none of which I could use to adequately support my family. Software is kind of the only thing I've got that can reliably pay the bills.

I'd follow the classic quote from Mr. Holland's Opus:
"Those who can't do, teach; and those who can't teach, teach gym."

AI couldn't replace a fry cook, let alone anyone in IT. It'd be less than a week before the AI screwed something up so bad that they'd beg to bring the workers back with a significant raise.

AI is garbage. Ban it.

I'll persude something in the realm of physiotherapy or alikes. 😁

for me, age is of bigger concern.
I had multiple, non-IT jobs: delivery, storage, chopping wood, factory work, handy workshop...
in reply to nixCraft 🐧

I wouldn’t like to change my working profile significantly. So, maybe, playing trombone in a brothel…
in reply to nixCraft 🐧

Plumber. Electrician, Automotive repair, Carpentry....... Been there done that, and that, and that...
in reply to nixCraft 🐧

maybe I would open a small grocery store in my neighborhood, only selling quality things, not low budget stuff

Fulfill my dream: buy a cottage in Lapland and starting making berry booze. That, or anything mechanical related

learnt control theory, but AI can as well build models and robust controls loops. Learnt electronics, but nowadays all is tied in a SOC. Tried to setup a wordplay shop on Mastodon with another account but it wasn’t successful, did not collect much dopamine nor oxytocin.
Well, don’t know yet.
Sysadmin can also be driven by auto managed ai systems.
Writing… yes my old project about writing novels… can now also be done by AI, it’s been tailored on generating text.

… Well, I guess i’ll be unemployed for long.

Will consider custom-painting caves for my fellow homo-sapiens people

since html&css gave life to the first design, later upgrades replacing flash to break most games 'N too new OS getting them "not compatible"...

why not rely on more origin thougths e.g. as mini-farmer for seeds (birds can eat them, humans eat them if they be harvestable)

inspiring. ideas to be thoughtful on resources or to use what the environment shares than having to own more than needed?

yoga instructor seems a good idea. No AI will ever do that.
Additionally, massage as well.
I even have the website ready to go muscle.hacker.lu/

My job will likely switch to fixing the mistakes that AI makes. To me, AI is just like a power drill. It turns bolts faster, but it can destroy a lot more than a screwdriver in much less time.

To me, it just moves the dev work from putting code on an empty slate to going to the debugging phase... which in some cases, can be longer than if the code was written from scratch.
